I wasn’t blessed with great athleticism or size. I was told over and over that I didn’t have the quickness or speed to become a college basketball player, much less a PRO!! I knew that I had the drive, determination and the belief but had no clue on how to close the gap between me and other players.
I will never forget the day that my mom came home excited! See, I have the type of mom that if she knew I wanted to be great at something, she was going to search the earth, far and wide, to find a way to get me the help I needed. She knew that I was frustrated with basketball and that I needed help. She told me that she sat and watched this guy teach kids the game of basketball in such a way that she had NEVER seen before.
Because my mom is an educator I knew she knew what REAL teaching looked like. I was so eager to see if this guy could help. But I have to be honest. I had a tad bit of an attitude problem and wasn’t easily impressed by anybody. So I went to a player development session and within 10 minutes I knew that he could give me what I needed to grow as a player! But trust me it wasn’t easy. His name was Dorian Lee. He was TOUGH and non-negotiable. He wouldn’t even let us use the words "CAN’T, HOPE, TRY, POSSIBLY," etc. He ONLY allowed us to use words like “ABSOLUTELY,” “I WILL,” and “NO DOUBT!” But what he taught was so SIMPLE and so EFFECTIVE that I literally would go back to school the next day and immediately start to apply what I learned! And it worked! And it continued to work from high school to college to eventually the pro game! Every step of the way, when there was an obstacle, there was ALWAYS the SYSTEM refer back to.
